Ylenia Petrelli was born in Rome. She followed her first theatre course at 18, while completing her last year of high school. This first course, in French, was organised by the San Luigi French Academy and ended with a play on the stage of the French Theatre in Rome. That same year, she enrolled at the Dams (Discipline delle Arti, Musica e Spettacolo – Discipline of Arts, Music and Performance) at the University of Rome (Roma Tre). During her first university year, she took part in an acting course at the Studio Internazionale dell’Attore in Trastevere, where she discovered Biomechanics.
At the end of 2005 she staged Cechov’s Cherry Garden at the Casa dei Teatri in Rome.
Between 2004 and 2005 during her last university years, she attended screenwriting workshops held by screenwriters Ivan Cotroneo and Francesco Piccolo and theatrical dramaturgy workshops held by play writers Marco Baliani and Ascanio Celestini.
She completed her degree in 2006, with a thesis on The Duchess of Padua, Oscar Wilde’s second play.
In the same year, she entered the Dams Theatre (Master Degree).
In the summer of 2007 she attended a dramaturgy, dance and acting course based on the life and works of the artist Alberto Giacometti, in the review field Prima Del Teatro -European School for Art of the Actor. In the meantime, she also joined smaller theatrical productions in Rome, mainly staging Shakespearean plays.
In 2009, she completed her Master Degree cum laude with a thesis on Antonin Artaud, entitled Le Thèàtre et son Double: A time for writing and a time for a bibliography tutored by Franco Ruffini, theatre theorist and historian. The thesis, through Artaud’s bibliography, provides the basis for a deeper comprehension of the composition of Artaud’s masterpiece.
The following year, she participated twice in Emma Dante’s theatre workshops in Palermo. In 2011 she attended the Francesca De Sapio School – The International Cinema and Theatre Institute, studying the Stanislavskij-Strasberg Method. In 2012, she participated in a theatrical dramaturgy workshop which was inspired by the English play-writer Caryl Churchill. The workshop was set up at the Valle Theatre by her thesis tutor from Dams, Paola Bono together with the theatre director Marta Gilmore. That same year, she finally produced and directed her first play, in which she adapted a contemporary version of Oscar Wilde’s ‘A Portrait of Dorian Gray’. The play was shown for a week at the Trastevere Theatre in Rome and it gained a discrete success amongst the underground public and critics. Between 2013-2014, she participated to a collective writing workshop on Il Ratto d’Europa, staged at the Argentina Theatre.
Over a period of 3 years (2011-2014), she worked on a personal research on the female figures of the Greek Mythology, such as Phaedra, Cassandra, Antigone, Iphigenia and Electra. She re-wrote their tragedies in the shape of a monologue for a female actor. Phaedra’s monologue was part of the Theatre Short Plays Review at the Sala Uno Theatre in Rome. She then participated to the UNDER 30’s Review – Young Authors for the Theatre – competition, where she won the third prize in the 4th edition. In 2015 she was assistant director in an independent film, L’Esodo by Ciro Formisano where she also played a minor role. In 2016, she was involved in the production of short films directed by young film makers and directors. One of these short films was called This is me on the other side of Earth and was directed by the newcomer Alessandro Bertoncini. In 2017 L’Esodo was shown to the public and gained fame in several independent festivals nationwide. It won prizes and mentions at the Naples Film Festival, Villammare Film Festival, Santa Marinella Film Festival, Terra di Siena, Foggia Film Festival, Cinema Film Festival in Mirabella Eclano (AV), GioCineFest
in Fano, Campania Cinema Awards. From the beginning of 2018 L’Esodo is running for the most important Italian cinema awards. In 2018, she appeared as co-protagonist in Playlist , a short film by Alessandro Bertoncini.
